Have you toweled you bird, or "flipped" your bird today? No? Well, today is a good day to start! Practicing toweling and flipping your Quaker over so that he/she can lie securely and comfortably in your hand allows you to closely examine your bird and relieves much of the stress associated with vet visits and grooming.

QUAKER ANATOMY

The easiest way to begin learning how to flip your Quaker onto its back for examination is to give your Quaker a good soaking bath and then wrap it in a nice comfy towel and cuddle. After you have been practicing for some time and everyone looks forward to the cuddle session, you can try to flip your Quaker over without the towel.

Let's practice toweling first:

It's best to use a smooth surfaced towel or cloth so that nails won't get caught or feathers ruffled.

A towel may be a very scary object for some birds. The hand holding the towel should be located behind the bird when covering.

Place the hand that you used to towel the bird across the bird's back securely, yet gently. Release the hand that is under the bird, while still keeping a secure hand on the back. Gently flip the bird over.

Now that you have your bird on its back in the towel, you can swaddle the bird comfortably with your free hand, as you would a baby. If necessary, you can even cover the bird's head and open the swaddle flaps to examine wings and nails.

With the bird's head uncovered, you can easily administer medications.
