February 6, 2024-

Public Service Electric and Gas Co. is planning to remove about a half-dozen wild Quaker nests in the Edgewater, NJ area. The company says the nests pose a fire hazard and it intends to "de-nest" the poles in the next month or so, as it does occasionally to prevent fires, according to Jennifer Connell, a PSE&G spokeswoman.

February 09, 2024- Miami, Florida Police charged a 34-year-old rescue worker with cruelty to animals after a weekend incident in which he bit the head off a Quaker parrot. Bruce Coates, 34, was suspended from his job with the Edgewater city fire department after his arrest on Monday, authorities said. A local official said Coates, who said he had been drinking alcohol and did not remember what had happened, was apologetic and offered to replace Izzy the parrot. Witnesses told deputies that Coates and several other people were playing billiards. The parrot was alledgedly, on one of the player's shoulder when Coates grabbed the parrot, put the bird's head in his mouth and bit it off. An Edgewater fire spokesperson has said that Mr. Coates will stay on leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.Online resources for the above articles are no longer available.

Scientists at Indiana University and Leiden University in the Netherlands have shown for the first time that parrots can use their tongues like humans, to craft and shape sound. The study was funded by a grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
